Private equity & portfolios
Private equity and portfolios
The value in a portfolio is created inside the companies, and the fund model only records it afterwards. An operating partner's recurring problem is seeing inside: where margin, capacity and predictability leak at each holding, which of those leaks is worth fixing, and whether an engineering organisation is an asset or a liability nobody has priced. We bring one diagnostic, run the same way at each company so the answers can be compared, and the diligence to run it before you buy.
The decisions that bind here
The decisions an operating partner makes
The calls that move a fund’s returns are made above the companies, and the evidence for them lives inside each one. So the recurring task is to read that evidence the same way at every holding, so that the same question gets the same kind of answer.
-
Where does margin leak?
Across a portfolio, the same failure modes recur: project loss, capacity misallocation, unpriced rework. The value is in finding them consistently. Start from scratch at each company and the same leak gets rediscovered for the third time.
-
Which leak is worth fixing?
Some inefficiencies cost less than the intervention would. We size the economic stakes so operating capital goes where the return is, and away from where the story is loudest.
-
Is the engineering an asset or a risk?
Before an acquisition, the code, the delivery record and the team’s decision quality tell you more than the roadmap. Engineering diligence reads what the deck cannot.
-
Which playbook transfers?
A diagnostic that runs the same way across companies turns one good intervention into a repeatable one, and tells you honestly where it will not transfer.
What it costs to get them wrong
What it costs when these go wrong
Diligence stops at the deck
Commercial and financial diligence rarely reaches the engineering organisation. A delivery function that cannot forecast its own cost is a risk you inherit at closing, and it was not in the price.
Reporting hides the decision
A monthly board pack tells you what happened. It does not tell you which decision caused it. And by the time a metric moves, the lever that would have changed it is gone.
One-offs do not compound
A bespoke improvement at one company teaches you little about the next. Without a diagnostic that runs the same way everywhere, the same leak gets rediscovered from zero, at each company, at full cost.
How we engage
How an engagement runs here
The engagement is built to repeat: the same audit, applied the same way, so findings are comparable across a portfolio. A proof of value comes before any build, at any company, and the fee for each step is fixed.
1. Audit
The same diagnostic at each company
A Decision Opportunity Audit runs the same way at each company : it establishes the baseline, sizes what the stakes are worth, then ranks where a better decision would pay, with outputs that can be compared from one company to the next.
2. Proof
Evidence before operating capital
Where the stakes justify it, a proof of value tests the method on the company’s own data before anyone commits budget. What counts as evidence is fixed in advance , see how we validate.
3. Build
Diligence first, then systems that last
Pre-deal, the same lens becomes engineering diligence. Post-deal, only what proved out is built and owned by the portfolio company. Find, Prove, Build is the order it happens in.
What we will not claim
A partner owns the engagement from the first conversation to the last invoice, and is the person you call when something is wrong. Work is confidential and unattributed by default. No company we have worked with appears in a deck, a case study or on this website without written permission, and several of the best ones never will. An audit is a fixed fee agreed before it starts, and it is measured in tens of thousands, so that finding out what a decision is worth costs materially less than getting it wrong once. References are owners who have been through it and will speak plainly about what did not work.
We do not publish portfolio outcomes we have not measured, and we do not promise a return before an audit has sized one. Where a diagnostic finds little worth fixing, that is the finding . It is worth knowing before capital is committed.
The instrument
The instrument
Gitrevio turns engineering activity into value intelligence: where margin leaks in delivery, how a project’s cost is trending, and whether a plan and its reality have parted company. Applied across a portfolio, it makes the same questions answerable at every company from a common baseline, on the owner's side and on the side of accountability, without reducing engineers to a surveillance metric. It is one instrument in a diligence and operating toolkit, not a verdict on its own.
Where it applies
- Operating partners standardising a value-creation diagnostic across holdings.
- Technical and engineering diligence ahead of an acquisition.
- Portfolio companies with software or delivery at the core of their margin.
- Owners who need the same evidence from every business, instead of a different story from each.
The research behind it
The method, published
When we are a fit
- A portfolio where the same decision problem recurs across several companies.
- Software or delivery is material to the value thesis in one or more holdings.
- Operating partners able to sponsor access to engineering and cost data.
When we are not
- A pure financial-engineering thesis with no operational lever to pull.
- No access to the underlying company data the diagnostic depends on.
- A search for a headline number before any baseline has been established.
FAQ
Questions from operating partners
What do you run across a portfolio?
One repeatable diagnostic, the Decision Opportunity Audit, run the same way at each company. It establishes the baseline, sizes the economic stakes and ranks where a better decision would pay, so what you learn at one holding means something at the next.
Can you assess an engineering organisation before we buy?
Yes. Pre-deal, the same lens becomes engineering diligence: the code, the delivery record and the team’s decision quality tell you more than the roadmap. A delivery function that cannot forecast its own cost is a value risk you would otherwise inherit unpriced.
Will you commit to a return before you have looked?
No. We do not publish portfolio outcomes we have not measured, and we do not promise a return before an audit has sized one. When a diagnostic finds little worth fixing, that is the finding, and it is worth knowing before operating capital is committed, and not after.
How does Gitrevio fit in?
Gitrevio turns engineering activity into value intelligence: where margin leaks in delivery, how a project’s cost is trending, whether plan and reality have parted company , answerable across companies from a common baseline. It is one instrument in a diligence and operating toolkit. On its own it is not a verdict.
Start with the decision
Bring us one company, or the pattern
One company, or the pattern you keep seeing across several. The audit sizes where a better decision would pay, and says where it would not. Fixed fee, run by a partner, comparable from one holding to the next.
